A legacy Passes to His Reward
John Leonard Smith, Jr. 1917-2011
(My Last living Uncle)
Smythe, as I affectionately called him, was a revered son, uncle, father, brother over the long life he lived. He always was consulted for any serious financial and family discussion. Smythe was a man whose words were usually always listened to because they almost always made sense.
Uncle John, was my mother Bernice Gruhler’s only brother, and his sister Violet Sloan’s older brother. Born of John Leonard Smith and Margaret (News) Smith in 1917 in Norwood, Pa. His life was one of football, boxing, and throwing darts with my Dad. Johnny Gruhler, and Uncles Walter Sloan, Ed Chapman and many friends in the neighborhood family type drinking establishments.
All of his children Lenny, Peg, Priscilla, Betty Mae, and Jackie were born to Smythe and my Aunt Betty (Dunn) Smith. Aunt Betty died in 1988 and he married Bernie Galaida and enjoyed 34 happy years with “Frumpy, a joke between she and I…” Bernie died quickly in 1999. He then married Betty Lachman of Chestnut Hill, Pa in 2000 and lived a wonderful peaceful marriage with Betty.
I had originally made a prior post of Uncle John’s passing shortly after he died but lost that information due to a server equipment failure. So I will refer you all to the audio podcast that I made that touches the favorite memories that I had….I loved him like my dad, but had fun with Smythe as a young Uncle would with his first nephew…Jack Gruhler
